A pick guard, usually made of thin acrylic plastic, serves to protect the surrounding region below & around the lower half of the soundhole of an acoustic guitar. It is attached to the sound board & depending on the manufacturer of the guitar, there is usually a gap between the soundhole & the start of the pick guard. A rosette is commonly incorporated in the guitar design, circling concentrically around the soundhole on the sound board. The wood around the lower edges of the soundhole, rosette & the exposed areas of the sound board (that the pick guard does not cover), are susceptible to damage from pick strikes while strumming. Because of the close proximity of the strings to the sound board and soundhole, striking against the upper & lower edges & surrounding area of the soundhole occurs while playing the guitar. Even a guitar moderately played, a pick will damage the soundhole edges & sound board. Some of the damages that are likely to occur over time include; marring/scratching of lacquer/resin finish of the guitar, eventual exposure of bare wood & chipping of wood which may later result to cracking & checking, possibly extending downward onto the sound board. The function of the patented Soundhole Guard is to deflect damaging pick strikes thereby protecting & preventing damage to your valued acoustic guitar.
* Fits most acoustic guitars with 3-1/2″ to 4-1/2″ diameter soundholes & .100 to .150 (2.54mm to 3.81mm) thick sound boards.
It’s never too late to protect your new, used & vintage guitars from this damage!
